“India’s National Game: Should it Be Hockey Or Kabaddi”
When it comes to sports, there are many games which have brought glory for our country. Amongst them, the most preferred one is hockey. Hockey started bringing India sporting glory when the country was still not independent. On the other hand, the other most preferred country game of India is Kabaddi. Kabaddi got rooted in India and has made our country the undisputed king of this game. But, the point of concern here is which should be our National Game, Hockey or Kabaddi? Thus, here the topic of discussion is “India’s National Game: Should it Be Hockey Or Kabaddi?” Before landing on any conclusion let’s discuss about both the games and their contributions to the glory of our Nation.
Why Hockey should be our National Game?:- India’s National Game: Should it Be Hockey Or Kabaddi
Hockey as a game started bringing Sporting Glory to India when our country was still not independent. Adding a sentiment to this, Hockey became India’s National Sport on unofficial terms. Now, Odisha Chief Minister Mr.Naveen Pattnaik has written to Prime Minister of India Mr.Narendra Modi to officially declare Hockey as the National Game of India. He has also made a proposal in his letter that Odisha is willing to host this year’s Hockey World Cup as well as the state administration will also sponsor the National Hockey Team of India. In his letter to the Prime Minister Mr.Modi, Chief Minister Mr.Pattnaik wrote – “While reviewing the preparations, I was surprised and shocked to witness that what is popularly known as the National Game, Hockey, has in fact never been notified as our National Game on official terms. Hence, I am sure you will agree with the crores of Hockey loving fans of our country that Hockey truly deserves to be notified as our National Game. This can prove to be the best fitted tribute to the great hockey players who have made our country proud”.
Hockey, like many other sports, was introduced to India by the British people. Now, Chief Minister Mr.Pattnaik’s letter has opened debate over whether Hockey should be notified as the National Game, or whether the honor should go to an indigenous Indian Sport such as Kabaddi which is an opponent to Hockey in the race of being the National Game of India. The Indian Hockey Team has won eight Gold Medals – the last of which was at the 1980 Moscow Games – and one Silver and two Bronze medals at the Olympics. But, results in the past, including at the recent past Olympics and World Championships have been below par of quality performance. The former Hockey Captain Dhanraj Pillay Ashok Kumar, son of Hockey Legend Major. Dhyan Chand and member of the 1975 World Cup winning team, welcomed Odisha Chief Minister’s pitch with regards to Hockey’s deemed notification as the National Game of India. So, according to these studies it can be professed that Hockey has a good level of credibility to be the National Game of India.
Why Kabaddi should be our National Game?:-
However, Kabaddi players countered Odisha Chief Minister Mr.Pattnaik’s suggestion of notifying Hockey as the Official National Game of India by saying that Kabaddi ind the only native game of India and it should be notified as India’s National Game.
Adding to this approach, Randhir Singh, Arjuna Awardee and winner of countless Titles as both player and coach in Kabaddi said – “Hockey may have won so many medals, but are they winning these days? I tell you this, we have been winning the Asian Games Gold Medal since 1990, that is nine Gold Medals in a row”. He again added to it – “Kabaddi should be announced as the National Game as this has been played since the old days”. Many sports researchers have professed that, India has been the undisputed king of this indigenous game Kabaddi. This game has not only rooted here, it is also the most popular game in rural areas across India.
Well, if we try to conclude this discussion; we have to observe all the points discussed above and they give us a clear picture of a silent tussle in India’s National Game: Should it Be Hockey Or Kabaddi. But, the observations indicate that Hockey is more prospective than that of Kabaddi to be the Official Game of India.
